Based on information provided by Israel, a minimum of 98 detainees from Palestine have died while detained starting from October 2023. A human rights group operating from Israel has indicated that the actual figure is almost certainly significantly higher, because of numerous of disappeared detainees originating in Gaza.

Study Results

A new investigation tracked deaths attributed to physical violence, medical neglect, and malnutrition. Investigators used official data requests, medical examiner documents, and interviews with attorneys, activists, next of kin, and witnesses.

“Although we are presenting proof for a greater figure of casualties than once estimated, this is not the entire story,” he explained. “We are certain that there are even now people who died in confinement that we have not identified.”

Civilian Deaths

Confidential official information suggests that the largest portion of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who lost their lives in prison were non-combatants, per a simultaneous examination.

By May of this year, a military intelligence database following all militants in Gaza, a roster of in excess of 47,000 listed people, recorded merely 21 deaths in confinement. By that date, 65 Gazans from Gaza had lost their lives in detention.

Detention Conditions

Physical violence, abuse, and additional maltreatment of Palestinians is now standard practice across Israel’s jail system throughout 24 months of hostilities. Merely one incident of assaulting inmates has proceeded to court, with the service member handed a punishment to 210 days. An effort to charge other suspects over a brutal attack including abuse led to political demonstrations and the detention of Israel’s senior defense attorney, with the accused individuals now requesting that charges against them be dismissed.

Lack of Accountability

“In spite of this large quantity of casualties, throughout the conflict not a single person has been arrested,” the representative noted. “There exist no charges over any death.

“While these practices are being applied, every Palestinian in detention is in danger, even the healthy ones, including the juveniles who have no medical issues.”

Prominent Examples

Some deaths in confinement have been high profile, including a 50-year-old hospital director who lost his life in detention after a third of a year in custody.

A detainee detained alongside the individual reported that he was taken to the exercise area by correctional officers shortly before his death, visibly injured and exposed from the hips downward. His remains has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Additional detainees who perished in Israeli custody are unidentified. Correctional authorities and armed services gave investigators with the total of deaths in detention, and basic additional information including the facility where they perished, but excluding the prisoners’ names.

Recognition Difficulties

In 21 cases, primarily people from Gaza, researchers were not able to match the limited information given by government bodies to a fatality recorded by rights organisations, via testimony from former inmates or coverage in the press.

The detainees’ families could be unaware about their loved ones’ deaths also, as Israel has made it difficult to track Palestinian individuals it is confining. Over half a year at the beginning of the war, the Israeli military would not provide to provide basic information about the condition of many of persons held in Gaza, practically enacting a policy of forced disappearance, per the rights monitoring body.
