Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have come off the medication report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
